In an increasingly competitive segment, the Yaris is a well-made but unremarkable option. It’s available as a three- or five-door hatchback and is powered by a noisy 1.5-liter four-cylinder that makes a paltry 106 hp. Both five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions are available; get the manual to wring as much performance out of the engine as you can. The top-level SE, available only as a five-door, benefits from a sportier suspension and quicker steering for improved handling.
