Powered by a 4.7-liter twin-turbo V-8 that makes a whopping 429 hp, the SL550 has the kind of blinding acceleration you’d expect from a six-figure luxury roadster. Although its primary directive is comfortable cruising, handling is neutral and lithe. The numb steering feel, however, will disappoint enthusiastic drivers looking for a spirited driving companion. Its aluminum body panels save weight, but the SL’s styling is polarizing at best. At least the interior is luxurious and comfortable.
