Smart Fortwo

It's right-sized for city life, but the ForTwo is impractical just about anywhere else. Choose the gas-powered version if you can tolerate meager power and a painfully slow-shifting five-speed automated manual. The ForTwo Electric Drive, which offers about 80 miles of range, is the better driver of the pair and, like the gasser, comes in both coupe and cabrio versions. The ForTwo is at home on urban surface streets. Highway driving in the tiny two-seater can be downright scary.
