BMW X1

Think of the X1 as a tall 1-series hatchback rather than a little SUV. It exhibits familiar BMW traits: a sporty suspension, precise steering, and a choice of turbocharged engines. But rather than focusing on driving dynamics, the X1 emphasizes fuel efficiency to a fault. The stop-start system is unrefined and energy-efficient tires yield long braking distances. The standard eight-speed automatic includes a manual mode; no stick is offered. Rear- or all-wheel-drive versions are available.
